Sustainability Synthesis 101

Introduction: Sustainability Synthesis 101 (Suzy101) is a tool for sustainable decision-making.  It is more than a decision-making template, it is a new methodology or analysis of the physical/environmental, social, and economic demands over time generating a synthesis- a new solution, a balanced, sustainable solution.

It compares, sorts and organizes your info; evaluates, and can lead you into the future, helping guide you to your own best solutions, personally and professionally.  See Applications and Benefits at the bottom of this page; and examples of case studies where similar principles and methodology have been utilized. 
Suzy101 is simple, fast and effective.

In Perspective:
In the larger scale, the planet scale, the basic question always comes down to: How can we help the earth to support life for ever? The answer lies in sustainable decisions, measured over time, with a a balance or equilibrium of ecological, social and economic factors over time, i.e Planet, People and Profit.  The Iroquois were known for their sageness, always taking into account the next 7 generations in making important decisions. 

As the Iroquois, we can help our selves, help each other and the planet, as each one of us is an integral part of this universe. Our individual actions generate "water ripples" and influencing others.  Learning to make sustainable decisions will allow your actions to start generating positive "ripples" helping the planet, while giving you leverage to cope with fast changes and reach your own goals.  A Client said:  I see, "Sustainability is at the personal level too!" Here are a few examples/case studies:
Recent Application of the Susy101: Lisa has a small meditation practice, and was trying to decide whether to expand. Susy101 allowed evaluation of the physical space (for classes), the social aspect (students being happy now and in the future), and the economic aspect (financial survival).  The new solution was to create "Virtual Meditation rooms" via the Internet to make it feasible for Lisa's intention to expand her business with restricted resources. 

Example of application of the Basic Sustainability Exercise- a precursor of the Synthesis:
Lorraine, a past Land Use Client hired me to resolve a code violation on an existing, non-permitted shed on her property, to the tune of $30,000 - $60,000, depending on Geologic Studies. After applying a basic Sustainability Exercise, Lorraine realized the shed was a dream of her recently passed husband, rather than her own, and she decided to invest her time and money in her own more sustainable retirement plans instead. To demolish the shed it took about $2,000.

The principles and methodology in Susy101 could be a tool for economic development. It could be use to avoid significant policy errors. For example, the Brazilian government decided to bulldoze slums communities, where multi-generational families lived in very poor and unsanitary conditions, to build them new and better housing. While the brand new housing was to improve quality of life, no one thought about the social impacts of such actions. I.e. teaching the residents how to use the new sanitation systems, so they planted flowers in their toilets! The project failed in its social aspects, as it did not educate the people while eliminating their social networks of survival. The healers, caretakers, and free exchange of services could no longer take place. They were broken apart and forced to start from scratch!

A sawmill in a small town I was the Director of Planning/ Zoning wanted to add a new re-saw, but already the dust and noise was a huge factor for the town's people.  After the application of basic principles, today incorporated into Susy101, the sawmill agreed to reduce their impact on the neighbors by using filters and sound walls if they want to expand. Application of this balanced sustainability triad approach included paying attention to impacts on people/society, resulting in a positive economic impact, or profit as the Company efforts resulted in an increase for their product. The Leading Sustainability Indicators were that both decibels and particles were reduced, and the sawmill contributed to the planet/environment, by cleaning up its actions.  A further Sustainability Indicator would involve the Company donating towards planting trees to offset carbon dioxide emissions that it causes buy cutting trees.

The ultimate goal for the application of  the Sustainability Synthesis 101 is to help people make sustainable decisions for the health of the planet and the survival of humanity.
